HITOEDA

Set bonsai free.

We want to break bonsai’s stiff image and bring it to people all over Japan and the world. That is why we made HITOEDA, a bonsai that grows on your screen.

It never dies and needs no space. One minute a day, right in your browser.

We want to carry this art forward.

Bonsai is said to be losing the people who carry it on, because growing it takes land and many years.

The countryside has land to spare. If trees carefully raised in rural Japan could reach people everywhere, growers could make a living, and more people might choose to take up the craft. That is where this began.

The other problem is bonsai’s stiff image. A hobby for the elderly. Difficult. Easy to kill. As long as people see it that way, it will never reach anyone new.

So we decided to make bonsai playful. Dye the leaves. Grow new branches. Travel through time. We break bonsai’s rules on purpose, so that people who never thought it was for them, in Japan and around the world, can discover it.

The playful features below are the way in.

Do what bonsai says you shouldn’t.

Real bonsai comes with a long list of things you can’t do, and things you shouldn’t. Inside HITOEDA, you can try whatever comes to mind. Don’t like it? Undo, and it’s back the way it was.

Dye the leaves

Pick a color and trace over the leaves. A golden pine, an indigo maple: trees no real bonsai could ever be.

Grow a branch

Trace from the trunk or a branch toward where you want it, and a new branch grows. In real bonsai, a cut is forever. Here, if something is missing, you can simply add it.

Travel through time

A week, a month, a year from now. See how your tree will grow before it does, or go back in time and try again.

Turn it on by choosing “タイムトラベル派” (“Time traveler” mode) in the menu.

Hang it as a scroll painting

Turn your finished tree into a Japanese-style hanging scroll. You can also save it as a Google Meet background, in 3D or as a painting.

And of course, you can grow it the traditional way. Water it, trim what has grown, and shape it with wire, keeping an eye on the care meter, much as you would a real bonsai.

From a tree on your screen to a real one.

HITOEDA is not a replacement for bonsai. It is a way in.

We hope that people who discover the joy of trimming a branch on screen will one day want a real tree of their own, and that we can bring them bonsai carefully raised in rural Japan. That is how we want to connect the people who grow bonsai with the people who love it.

HITOEDA

Hitoeda means “a single branch.” Your bonsai begins the moment you touch that first one.

Start with one branch.

Open it and your tree is waiting. Answer two quick questions, then trace a branch to snip it. That’s your first minute.
